St. Burkard

The Catholic church of St. Burkard, formerly the Benedictine monastery church of St. Andreas, was, according to tradition, the first bishop's see in Würzburg around 750 and one of the first churches in the city. After a fire, the church was rebuilt from 1033. The polygonal upper storeys of the two eastern towers with their stone spires were built in 1250. In 1494, work began on the construction of today's striking choir and the late Gothic transept. These had to be built on flying buttresses in order to maintain the passage of the Uferstraße. Between 1663 and 1667, the west choir with transept and the western church tower were demolished to make room for the shipping canal and the fortification of the fortress hill. St. Burkard has been owned by the local parish since 1803.
